Sure there have been many times where you have wandered through a city and thought the environment and atmosphere  was amazing. Though what sometimes may seem as a natural occurrence or by luck, may actually be from purposeful and well planned city design.  There are definitely strong principles and elements of city design, that when followed, ensure an ideal community place. It is obvious where, people would always like to move a place where their expectations are met such as; the purpose in their stage in life, their personal preferences, the opportunities they have, need or desire, their lifestyle and their ambitions.

Architects and city planners aim to create a city which draws in a community –  a place where people would like to be as it is purposefully designed for good integration.  From the many studies of vibrant cities, there are many key elements which make a good city and one of them is transportation, walkability and mobility. A few points which makes mobility efficient in a city are as follows;

1. Block size and block structure must be scaled for easy pedestrian use.

2. Streets must connect for efficient travel choices.

3. Fronts are distinct from backs

4. Density of key locations

5. Mixing uses in walkable proximity promotes economic and physical sustainability.

A good city planning software is essential for designing the transportation routes of a city. Autodesk Architecture, Engineering and Construction collection and Autodesk Civil 3D assist city designers to create a better city life experience for citizens—and for municipalities, infrastructure and transportation providers, and others. There is now an importance to have a momentum underway which requires a better way of collaboration among architects, civil engineers, designers, fabricators, contractors, subcontractors, and owners that includes data and workflow convergence to achieve efficient city design.

Interconnection between all stake holders of designing a city and running it is essential to share relevant data, and even more so, collect data, in order to study and improve on designs. For example, mobility companies could work with infrastructure providers or municipalities to design the best way to integrate their services into the city. In fact, improvements to an existing city can be done with the right AEC design platform as well. There are many cities which are now transitioning into becoming a smart city. As opposed to traditional cities, the design and operation of a smart city is based much more on data and digital services. In terms of mobility, the ideas for a smart city may include intelligent public transportation networks, automated traffic management, and walkable or bikeable streets. The visions of city planners and designers in this regard may be assisted by the Project Explorer extension available in Civil 3D as part of the AEC Collection, in terms of sharing their information. Project Explorer provides an easy-to-use tool for design-data review and user-configurable report generation, allowing navigation, interaction and sharing of Civil 3D design information with ease.
